Slabbed $20 Gold Coins Doing Well
The typical understanding of numismatics as an investment versus bullion is that bullion (typically) will move up and down with the spot price, while numismatics are more isolated from the dramatic swings of spot, i.e. if spot drops 20%, a numismatic coin might only drop 10%, if spot jumps up 20%, a numismatic coin might jump 10%.
However, in these interesting times, I've noticed that the numismatic gold coins are enjoying massive premiums, even higher than those enjoyed by bullion as it disconnects from the "official" spot price. For instance, Apmex is selling slabbed MS-61 $20 liberty coins (common dates) for $1300 each, and MS-62 St Gaudens for the same! Look on ebay, the same is the case, that these slabbed $20 gold coins are going for roughly $1300 a piece right now! This is neat for me because I bought a couple of these as opposed to bullion when gold was around $900 on its way up to $1000. Now that spot has dropped from $1000 down to the mid $700s, I've seen these coins jump up even higher than the spot price has jumped down! And since they're numismatic coins, I don't have to be concerned with the spot price, because spot is for bullion, massive premiums are for numismatics. Woo hoo!:565: |

There is a prermium that is currently being caught at this time but I dont see that as a permanant thing when silver and gold REALLY take off I expect people to be paid what the market value is . people still trying to collect on the numi premium will have a long @$$ wait.

Yes, I agree with you, but when gold and silver really take off, then the gold price will push these coins up along with bullion. I foresee over $2000/oz gold in the not too distant future, and by that time both the $20 gold coins and bullion will be doing extremely well.

Agree with both of you: however, right now MS65 $20 are up higher than the last 10 years to my checking abilities.
So one (like I if I wanted too) could cash out now at about 6 times what I paid in 2000: they were raw and then PCGS slabbed. $315 then - paid $2200 now - retail - can run them on Ebay for say, $1890.00 each. Frankly am waiting for $3,200 to $3,600 - honest. http://www.thelongwaveanalyst.ca/pdf/07_12_04_News.pdf mentions gold is good for the winters. :signs14::signs14::signs14::111::111: |
